Mach as a Unit of Speed
Mach is a unit used to measure the speed of an object in relation to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium. At standard conditions of 20°C and 1 atm, the speed of sound in air is approximately 343 meters per second (or about 1235 kilometers per hour at sea level). When an object travels at Mach 1, it is moving at this speed. The Mach number is dimensionless and is defined as the ratio of the speed of the object to the speed of sound in the same environment.
As the Mach number increases, the behavior of the object can change significantly, leading to phenomena such as shock waves and changes in aerodynamic properties. Speeds are often categorized into subsonic (Mach < 1), transonic (Mach ≈ 1), supersonic (Mach > 1 and < 5), and hypersonic (Mach ≥ 5) regimes, each having distinct characteristics and implications in aerodynamics.
