Year (Julian) as a Unit of Time
The Julian year is a time unit defined as 365.25 days. This system was established by the Roman general and statesman Julius Caesar in 45 BC as part of the Julian calendar. It served to approximate the actual solar year, which is about 365.2425 days. The additional quarter day results in a leap year every four years, where an extra day is added to February, making it 29 days long instead of the usual 28 days.
This method was implemented to keep the calendar year aligned with the seasons. However, due to a slight inaccuracy, the Julian calendar ultimately led to a drift over centuries. As a result, it was later reformed into the more accurate Gregorian calendar in 1582, which adjusted the leap year rules to better reflect the solar year.
