What is the chain?
The chain is a unit of length. It equals 66 feet. The chain was first introduced between 1579 and 1607.
Several countries have used chain for several centuries especially in England. Note that there are 80 chains in one mile.
The main use of the chain is in laying out US townships. Official governments must use US survey chain to do surveys according to the federal law passed in 1785.
